Baylor Peak is the northernmost peak in the Organ Mountains, easily accessible from its east or west sides on mostly trails. This was a chill early morning jaunt for me. I picked the west side, starting at an official BLM trailhead off Baylor Canyon Rd. This was a popular spot for those camping in their vehicles.
Peaks climbed
| Peak | Elevation | Topographic Prominence | Summit Coordinates (lat/lon) |
|---|
| Baylor Peak | 7,721 ft | 1,339 ft | 32.39331, -106.57776 |
Total Stats
8.3 miles
2,900 ft gain/loss
I started around 5:40am, purposely timing it so that I could catch a sunrise from the summit. The trail headed east, initially well defined, but pretty quickly became overgrown and washed out. It was still easy enough to follow with a headlamp though. About 3.3 miles in, I reached Baylor Pass and turned left (north) onto a side trail heading to the peak. This trail steepened rapidly but was initially easier to follow than the other overgrown trail. Just below the summit, the trail disappeared and I rock hopped along an easy ridge to the summit. I hung around the summit for about an hour before retracing my route.
