Tahoe Mountain is a minor bump just east of Fallen Leaf Lake near South Lake Tahoe. It is a very short hike to reach its summit, and is recommended for those with less than an hour of time available who still want to hike something in the area.
Peak | Elevation | Topographic Prominence | Summit Coordinates (lat/lon) |
---|---|---|---|
Tahoe Mountain | 7,249 ft | 509 ft | 38.910167, -120.036044 |
Getting to the trailhead: From South Lake Tahoe, travel 3 miles south on Lake Tahoe Blvd, then turn right on Tahoe Mountain Rd and travel 1.1 miles. Turn right onto Glemore Way and stay on it for 200 ft, then take the next right onto Dundee Dr. Travel 0.2 mi on Dundee Dr before making another right onto Deveron Way. Travel another few hundred feet up Deveron Way to where a small trail branches off to the right (north). There is very limited parking here.
Trailhead coordinates (lat/lon): 38.9030, -120.0328
I had just completed the Glen Alpine Traverse and met back up with Mason at Fallen Leaf Lake. Since it was still early in the day, we decided to tag nearby Tahoe Mountain. None of of had really researched this hike beforehand, so we simply drove up to Deveron Way, which was the closest road to the peak that our maps had indicated. We parked by the start of a single track trail labeled "Devron Connector" and began hiking up the trail. After a few switchbacks, it was clear that the trail was not heading in the direction we wanted to, so we left it and made a beeline for Tahoe Mountain's southern (lower) summit to the northeast, which was about 0.3 miles away.
starting point
view from southern summit
From the south summit, we picked up a trail which ran along the summit ridge, and followed it northwest to the true summit. In all, it took about 10 minutes to walk between the summits.
views from summit ridge
The summit itself was occupied by some sort of tiny structure, with its views obscured by trees.
We returned back the exact way we came, happy to have explored this small and relatively unknown peak.
